In this post we will explain how to increase your website’s search engine rank and visibility by generating quality SEO backlinks in 2023. By this point, every web designer, web developer, marketing expert, and entrepreneur will know that SEO is elemental to a successful website. However, most people still do not understand the power of generating high quality backlinks!
Generating backlinks is not commonly offered among the web design services because it mostly involves external elements and organizations. When not done correctly, it can be inefficient and the profit margin for the web design agency gets reduced as the SEO budget will be shared. Good quality backlinks usually have a cost, and bad quality backlinks are useless.
This affects the end client because good quality backlinks are essential for good SEO, specially in high competition industries!
What is a Backlink?
A backlink is a link (duuhh!) that refers into your domain from an external domain. It can also be explained and simplified as one website linking to another website. They will usually be placed as links within content such as blogs and articles, or in directories such as Yelp.
In theory, a high quantity and quality of backlinks would mean that your content is trusted and relevant. So relevant, that other websites use you as a reference and trust you enough to direct their own traffic into you.
The key word is: Relevance
Google and other search engines don’t know what information is true and what is not true, they don’t know which pizza tastes better or which fitness studio will make you fitter. They still want to make sure that the top results in every query are always high quality!
To assure this, they will try to develop algorithms that estimate how relevant your domain and your content is. They figured out that if many people are talking positively about you, you must be doing something good! And so they push you to the top of their ranking.
Quality of Backlinks
So now you have your brand new website and you want to generate good quality backlinks. How can you determine the quality of a backlink? Here we will explain a few elements that you can check out to get to make an educated decision.
Page Rank
The most evident element to check out is the page rank of a website. You can do multiple Google searchs and find out how high or low is the website ranking. If it does not even appear on Google then you discard it as a low quality backlink.
There are also many free and paid tools that you can use to get different perspectives on the value of a website. Some examples include:
Anchor Text
The anchor text refers to the actual text that you can click. For example, I will generate the next internal link: Make sure to contact us for a free SEO audit!
It is an internal link because it takes the visitor to a page within our website (same domain). The anchor text is “free SEO audit”, and this is important for me because it is relevant to what the visitor will find at the destination page.
You should avoid the backlinks that place the link on a generic word such as “click here”! The words “Click here” have absolutely no relevance to your content and so the backlink quality will be reduced.
It is important to make a difference between a backlink and a button within your website. It is normal and correct to have “click here”, or “more information” buttons within your website. We are specifically talking about backlinks in this post.
Spam Links
So speaking about the “click here” backlinks… having spammy links will also reduce the quality! That means, having a disproportionate ratio of links to content. It can also mean having many redirect links on your website. By redirect links we mean when you click on a link, it takes you to a url to then be automatically redirected to another url as a trick.
Spamming domains will get penalized by Google and so their backlinks will generate no positive value to your SEO.
